Barracuda

Email security, firewalls, SASE and backup for mid-market and enterprise

  • Security & Endpoint Protection
  • Subscription

For · IT and security managers at medium-sized organisations and upper mid-market with hybrid infrastructure

Barracuda Networks is a broad security provider offering products for email security (Email Protection), network security (CloudGen Firewall, SecureEdge SASE), application security (WAF-as-a-Service) and data protection (Backup). Barracuda is particularly strong in the mid-market and is sold through a partner model. Since the acquisition by KKR in 2022, the product range has been rapidly shifted towards consolidated subscription suites.

The licensing model is mostly per user (email, SASE) or per appliance (firewall, WAF). Over recent years, Barracuda has steadily increased prices and actively promoted multi-year contracts. Customers who fail to renegotiate in time therefore consistently face price increases of 10-20% upon renewal.

Procurement considerations

  • Unbundle Email Protection before signing

Barracuda often pushes Email Protection Premium Plus bundled with archiving and backup. In practice, only a portion of customers actually use these modules. Check beforehand if you need Email Archiving and Cloud-to-Cloud Backup before accepting the bundle.

  • Review firewall sizing before renewal

Barracuda uses CPU-core based firewall licenses. When migrating to virtual or cloud firewalls, scaling is often overly generous. A sizing review by an independent party can prevent overbuying of 20-40%.

  • Choose wisely between 1-year and 3-year contracts

Barracuda offers standard 1- and 3-year contracts. Discounts are negotiable on 3-year contracts but you lose flexibility. For organisations with a highly variable workforce, a 1-year contract with price lock is often strategically better.

  • Leverage the partner channel for deal registration

Barracuda sells almost exclusively through partners. Deal registrations and partner escalations can yield extra discounts that an end customer won't get directly. A good purchasing partner will arrange this on your behalf.

Compliance risks

  • Email content in threat analysis

Barracuda Email Protection scans and stores email metadata and sometimes full messages for threat analysis. For organisations handling sensitive personal data (healthcare, legal, HR), this requires a thoroughly drafted Data Processing Agreement and explicit EU data location.

  • End-of-support on older appliances

Barracuda appliances must have an active subscription contract for security updates. Organisations that stop renewing – or forget to renew – continue to physically operate the hardware but without definition updates. This is a direct security risk that will be immediately flagged during an audit.

  • Migration after ESG incident

In 2023, Barracuda’s Email Security Gateway (ESG) was affected by a critical zero-day vulnerability. Organisations still running physical ESG appliances are strongly encouraged to migrate to Email Protection (cloud). Ignoring this migration leads to compliance risks and insurance exclusions.

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda

Frequently asked questions about Barracuda licences and procurement.

What is the difference between Barracuda Email Protection Essentials, Advanced and Premium?

Essentials covers anti-spam, malware and phishing. Advanced adds impersonation protection, account takeover detection and incident response. Premium also bundles Email Archiving and Backup. For organisations with raised CEO fraud risk, Advanced is the minimum standard.

Does Barracuda offer added value beyond Microsoft Defender for Office 365?

There is some functional overlap. Microsoft Defender has strongly improved and is sufficient for many organisations. However, Barracuda offers stronger impersonation and social engineering detection, and an independent 'second layer' outside Microsoft. Many enterprise customers deliberately run both in parallel.

Can SoftVaro take over our Barracuda renewal?

Yes. SoftVaro analyses your current Barracuda stack, checks if you are still paying for licenses on appliances you no longer use, and negotiates the renewal. We also provide independent advice if you consider consolidating to a single supplier (e.g. Proofpoint or Mimecast).
